New Oil in Old Lamps:
A modern approach to Suśruta’s Surgery

Thursday 12th November 2009

IIT London Chapter invites you for a talk by K.M.N.Kunzru, MS,FRCS,DHMSA on Thursday 12th November 09 titled, New Oil in Old Lamps: A modern approach to Suśruta’s Surgery

Suśruta , the surgeon/physician practised in Varanasi in the middle first millenium BCE. We know little about him as a person , except what one can glean from his Compendium of Medicine and Surgery, Suśrutasamhitā .

The Compendium is in six parts, five sthāna s, and the final, significantly and extensively edited, Uttaratantra. The treatise appears to be directed at qualified practitioners of Medicine and Surgery; more like a vade-mecum, than a textbook for the untrained student

Though many translations and commentaries on the book have been published, only a few are by practising modern surgeons. Singhal and Valiathan are the more recent ones.

Ravi Kunzru has tried to approach the work in a different way. He has himself translated relevant surgical and related parts of the Compendium with the help of and validation by Sanskritists. .He has ,in addition, uniquely attempted to reproduce three surgical procedures in cadavers , human and animal, with the aid of other specialist colleagues. He will talk about his observations when reproducing these surgical operations
