Past Events 2000
- 2003
First Dinner 2000
A dinner was held at the Indian YMCA on 18th October
to coincide with the visit of Prof Gaitonde and Prof
Narayanmurthy from IIT Bombay. This was our inaugural
meeting. About 25 people attended, some from outside
London. The visiting professors made presentations on
IIT’s perspective on the role of overseas alumni,
and how these organisations can become ambassadors worldwide
for IITs.
Lunch at YMCA 2002
A lunch was organised on 9th June at the Indian YMCA
to receive Prof Gaitonde from IIT Bombay’s Alumni
Affairs on his stopover from the USA to India. 30 people
attended.
Picnic in Richmond Park 2002
On 4th August, we organized a picnic in Richmond Park.
Every one of the 60 people who came to the picnic went
away with unforgettable memories of tasty food consumed
during the British imitation of Indian monsoons. We
had a soaking good time.
First Annual Dinner 2002
The first annual dinner was held on 17th November at
the Malabar Junction restaurant in London. It was attended
by 80 IITians, including their families and friends.
There was lots of getting to know each other and nostalgic
IIT hostel humour.
Spring Dinner 2003
A dinner was held on 5th April at
the Malabar Junction restaurant in London. It was attended
by 80 IITians, including their families and friends.
Prof Dr Balasubramaniam (IIT) Vice President of Daimler
Chrysler, the designer of the Maybach Mercedes model,
was our chief guest. He flew in from Germany and gave
us a very interesting talk.
Meeting with Director of IIT Bombay 2003
We organised a lunch on 26th MAY at Utsav Restaurant in
Kensington with Prof Ashok Mishra, the Director of IIT
Bombay and Fellow at Trinity College Cambridge U.K. Prof
Mishra was returning to Bombay after completion of his
tenure at Cambridge. We exchanged views on IITs in general,
and the important subject of recruiting and upgrading
skills of faculty staff. 15 IITians attended the lunch.
Visit to Trinity Hall Cambridge 2003
We organised a visit and lunch at
Trinity Hall Cambridge U.K. on 5th July. Our chief guest
was Dr Amartya Sen, an expert on the economics of world
poverty, for which he received the Nobel Prize. We had
65 attendees including Prof Mishra from IIT Bombay.
We also had visitors from abroad, including India, France,
and the USA. We also visited Trinity Hall and were shown
its ancient silver collection with a very illuminating
talk by Prof Vasant Kumar (an IITian).
Summer Picnic 2003
Summer picnic was held at one of our
Kharagpur alumni’s home in Newchapel, Surrey.
Peter Chan who is well known in Kharagpur circles, now
runs the UK’s premier Bonsai nursery on a beautiful
seven and half acre site. On that occasion, we had nearly
eighty people attend. The weather was nice, the food
was excellent (and cheap at £5 a head), and the
company great. Like all IIT events, the ‘Tempo’
was exuberant, which proves that even though we get
older we don’t lose any of the IIT Spirit.
